Music Theory Empowerment!

Have you ever felt like you are "not a real musician" because you don't understand some of the terminology people throw around in musical situations?  This class is designed for active music enthusiasts with gaps in their music theory knowledge.  With a lighthearted, mutually supportive approach, we delve into many of the nooks and crannies of music theory, and how they can be applied in your musical life.

Results students have achieved with Music Theory Empowerment:

  1. Improved sight singing and sight reading
  2. Better understanding of rhythmic patterns
  3. More confidence as musicians
  4. Increased respect for the complexity of music and the work of musicians
  5. Hearing things in music they were unaware of before
  6. Less irritation about accidentals in music due to understanding their context and      function

We use the fun book Music Theory for Practical People, in conjunction with the Melodia sightsinging handbook and The Rhythm Bible.

Every class meeting includes drill activities in sight singing, ear training, and rhythm reading.

Fall: Level I is a ten-week introduction to music theory concepts involving the major scale and major keys, including diatonic triads, intervals, harmonization, inversions, and more.

Winter/Spring: Level II is a ten-week continuation, moving on to more advanced concepts such as the minor scale, seventh chords, transposition, cadences, and more.
